Ulcerative Colitis Symptoms

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a form of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). It is a form of colitis, a disease of the intestine, specifically the large intestine. Normally characteristic are ulcers, or open sores in the colon. The main symptoms of active disease is normally constant diarrhea mixed with blood. Ulcerative colitis in an intermittent disease, with periods of exacerbated symptoms, and periods that are relatively symptom free. Sometimes the symptoms can diminish on their own, but the disease normally requires treatment to go into remission.

  • Audible gastrointestinal disturbances
  • Abdominal pain
  • Urgency to produce a bowel movement following an inability to do so
  • Rectal pain / bleeding
  • Fever
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
