In September 2010, the U. S. Food and Drug Administration announced the use of the diabetes drug, Avandia®, would be drastically restricted to patients with Type II diabetes who are unable to control their diabetes without medication. These new restrictions are in reaction to data that have indicated an increased risk of cardiovascular events, such as heart attack and stroke in patients treated with Avandia®.

According to the Food and Drug Administration alert "Safety data from controlled clinical trials have shown that there is a potentially significant increase in the risk of heart attack and heart related deaths in patients taking Avandia®." The Black Box Warning (sometimes referred to as black label warning or boxed warning, is a type of warning that is on the package insert of certain prescription drugs that may cause serious, adverse effects. It is named for the black border that typically surrounds the text of the warning. This highest level of alert means that medical studies have revealed that the prescription medication carries a significant risk of serious and even life-threating harmful effects.).
