Johnson and Johnson is a subsidiary of DePuy Orthopaedics and has announced a recall of two DePuy ASR hip replacement systems due to an unreasonably high failure rate. This may cause thousands of patients to experience pain and possibly require a revision or second hip replacement surgery.
The DePuy ASR Hip Resurfacing Systems and DePuy ASR XL Acetabular Systems have both been recalled, totaling about 93,000 devices were sold to implant in hip patients.
According to new data released in 2010 from the National Joint Registry (NJR) of England and Wales have shown that approximately 12% of ASR Hip Resurfacing System and a 13% of the ASR XL Acetabular System have required revisions. Although these rates are for all sizes, the company has noted that the head sizes smaller than 50 mm in diameter, and those implanted in female patients, were most likely to fail.
It has been advised by the DePuy Orthopaedics company that all patients with ASR hip device see their surgeons for evaluation, even if they are not experiencing problems.
In 2005, DePuy developed the metal-on-metal ASR hip replacement implant. Health care professionals have increasingly been warning about the metal-on-metal implants, which can shed metal particles into the body. The particles can damage soft tissue, cause inflammatory reactions and lead to bone loss.
It has been indicated by DePuy that it intends to provide ASR hip settlements to cover reasonable and customary costs for monitoring and treatment, including revisionary surgeries that are connected with the defective hip implant(s). However, make sure that you contact a personal injury attorney before accepting any compensation to make sure that your rights are protected and that you receive all the benefits and money that may be entitled to you through a DePuy ASR hip recall lawsuit.
