Qualifying for Disability Benefits if You Don't Meet the Listed Criteria
Some impairments under Social Security Disability have such strict criteria that very few people ever qualify. Even some cancers do not automatically qualify — there must be related health problems that prevent a person from rejoining the workforce.
If you do not meet the "official symptoms" of a listed impairment, it does not mean you are not disabled. Gordon McKernan and McKernan Law Firm want to help you get the disability benefits you deserve and that you desperately need. Our lawyers are knowledgeable about alternative ways to qualify.

Alternative Eligibility for Social Security Disability
To receive SSD or SSI, you must be unable to work for 12 months or more. The Social Security Administration gives some leeway to people who (a) do not meet the listed criteria or (b) have additional challenges in finding work they can do.
You may get some consideration in your application or appeal of denied benefits if one or more of these apply:
- You are over age 50
- You have little education or limited work skills
- There are no eligible jobs in your area
- You have multiple impairments but no single qualifying impairment
- You do not meet the exact criteria but can prove a functional equivalent
- You have a non-listed physical impairment that makes work impossible
We Know the Grid Rules That Can Help You Qualify
Our attorneys are familiar with the Social Security Administration's "grid rules" for alternative eligibility. We will review your medical records and work history and gather additional documentation to help convince the hearing judge to award benefits.
