Social Security Disability Benefits for Your Family
If you cannot work because of a disabling condition, it is a hardship for your entire family, especially if you were the breadwinner.
- Did you know that your spouse and dependent children can receive additional Social Security Disability (SSD) benefits if you qualify?

Social Security Disability Spouse Benefits
If you qualify for Social Security Disability, your spouse may be entitled to receive a separate monthly payment of up to one-half of your benefit amount. This does not reduce your benefits. Your wife or husband must be (a) age 62 or older or (b) caring for a child under 16 or a disabled child.
SSD Benefits to Dependent Children
Your child or children under age 18 are entitled to disability benefits if they are dependent on you for support (whether or not they live in your home). A child who is still in high school can receive the dependent benefit up to age 19. A child over 18 who is disabled can qualify for his or her own full disability benefits. If you have several dependent children, the maximum benefit is split equally among them.
Other Benefits to Family Members
- Under certain criteria, an ex-spouse may collect spouse benefits.
- A widow/widower who is disabled can collect benefits based on the earnings of the deceased if that payment would be higher.
